The placement of the story is important to Mark. As the very first anecdote concerning Jesus’ public ministry, it sets the tone for the entire section extending to 8:26. It is the overture, whose themes are echoed and developed in the ensuing chapters. Why does Mark choose this particular story for the inauguration of Jesus’ ministry?
